The tortoiseshell and tricolor descriptions were used to classify each cat’s coat color and pattern. One thing to know about tortoiseshell cats and tricolors is that neither is technically considered a breed of cat. This is how an orange tabby kitten with tan and calico coloring comes out. The black and orange cat pigment genes are attached to the X chromosome. However, males should have an extra Y chromosome (XXY) to have the tortoise or calico color pattern. Out of these chromosomes, the XX female code is the most common.
